style and fabric inspiration: lisette B6169 moto jacket

I bet you've had that one piece of clothing that ended up being a staple in your wardrobe, even more than you originally expected. When I worked at Ralph Lauren, we were treated to some incredible perks, and the sample sales were definitely my favorite. I could snag high-quality pieces for a fraction of their usual price. Todd wasn’t thrilled when I left that job because much of his wardrobe consisted of Ralph Lauren Purple Label pieces at the time.

One of my most cherished finds from those sales was a black fleece moto jacket that I’ve been wearing nonstop ever since. It’s incredibly cozy and warm, yet surprisingly versatile. The jacket's adaptability has consistently impressed me. I used to think a moto jacket was more suited to someone who looked tougher or more daring than me, but I’ve discovered that this style can transition effortlessly across various settings. Whether it’s a business meeting, church, evening events, or casual weekends, this jacket fits the bill. I mentioned this versatility during my introduction of the new Lisette patterns, but I figured it might be useful for you to see how the moto jacket can truly shine in different contexts. So, I’ve been gathering photos to share with you!

Last week, I shared an idea with you—embellishing the jacket with tonal embroidery. It looked fantastic, right? But there are countless other ways to create and style this iconic look!

However, let’s explore more creative options for making and wearing this style!

  1. This use of multiple colors and textures is fantastic. The textured color blocking creates an illusion of layers, breaking up the fullness of the moto jacket if it feels overwhelming. Plus, it’s a great way to incorporate leather without going fully leather-heavy, and it’s more budget-friendly too.
  2. The pale pink hue adds such a lovely feminine touch to the jacket.
  3. A quilted front panel gives the jacket added texture and interest.
  4. Chambray works beautifully for spring.
  5. Cream tones are soft and elegant, especially when paired with other light neutrals. I adore the sheer layer peeking out underneath!
  6. For a bohemian vibe, embrace patchwork! This works wonderfully with remnants of home-decor-weight fabrics.
  7. Hot pink moto jackets are bold and striking—such a great mix of sweet and edgy.
  8. In cooler weather, consider a buffalo plaid version for a rugged, timeless look.
  9. Spring calls for a light taupe suede jacket. It’s chic and versatile!

And that’s not all! I’ve curated some of my favorite styles for my Lisette Pinterest board. Head over there for more inspiration and larger, uncropped versions of the images above.

How about we embark on a sew-along for this style? I’ll be traveling next week, but I’ll get started on creating my own version when I return and we’ll schedule a date soon. That should give you plenty of time to pick your fabric and gather your supplies, right?

Let me know what you think, and feel free to share any ideas or fabric choices you’re considering. Sewing is always more fun when we do it together!

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s creations! Until then, happy sewing!
