Home textiles contain "toxic" consumers how to protect themselves

In recent years, as people's standard of living has improved, the design and quality of home textiles have also seen significant progress. However, with the growing consumer demand in this market, some substandard products have started to appear, posing serious risks to consumers. These products may look attractive at first glance, but after washing, they tend to fade or shrink quickly. Worse still, some fabrics fail to meet safety standards in terms of their composition, dye content, and pH levels, which can lead to skin irritations and allergic reactions. At the end of last year, the Beijing Municipal Administration of Industry and Commerce released a report on the quality inspection of bedding products in the market. It was found that one brand contained azo dyes that release carcinogenic aromatic amines, raising serious concerns about product safety. According to reports, there are four major issues with home textile products. First, the actual fabric content often does not match what is labeled. Second, color fastness is poor, leading to quick fading. Third, the pH level of the fabric is frequently out of the safe range. Lastly, some raw materials used in production are not suitable for direct contact with the skin, such as clothing and bedding. During the textile manufacturing process, various dyes, auxiliaries, and finishing agents are used. Some of these substances may contain harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin. Experts point out that human skin has a slightly acidic pH, and if the fabric’s pH is too high or too low, it can disrupt the natural balance of the skin, leading to irritation, allergies, and even long-term health risks. In some cases, exposure to certain chemical residues may increase the risk of cancer. To address these problems, manufacturers must improve their control over raw materials and the dyeing and finishing processes. Poor quality control can result in unsafe products entering the market, which can harm consumers' health and rights. If consumers find that a product fails quality tests, they have the right to take legal action against the manufacturer or file a complaint with the relevant authorities to protect their interests. It is crucial for both producers and consumers to remain vigilant. Consumers should choose reputable brands and pay attention to product labels and certifications. At the same time, stricter regulations and regular inspections are needed to ensure that home textiles meet safety and quality standards. Only through collective efforts can we build a safer and healthier textile market for everyone.
