Pakistan: Cotton production may be lower than official target

According to Pakistan’s “Daily Times” reported on October 27, the Pakistan Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) recently predicted that this year (July 2011 to June 2012) Pakistan’s cotton production will be 2.08 million tons, or 255 The official forecast target of 10,000 tons is reduced by 18.5%.

Officials from the country’s Ministry of Industrial Production stated that this year’s cotton growth was good and the incidence of diseases and insect pests was also lower than last year. However, heavy rain and floods from early August to September in Sindh destroyed large areas of cotton. The rainy weather in Punjab also affected the Regional cotton production, so the cotton loss is more serious. According to CCAC, the cotton planting area in Punjab Province this year was 38.97 million mu and the output was estimated to be 1.657 million tons. After the flood, the harvestable area of cotton in Sindh was only 4.038 million mu and the expected output was 408,000 tons; the cotton planting area in Baluchistan was 470 thousand mu, and the output is expected to be 11,700 tons. It is reported that the CCAC will hold a meeting on November 23 to make a prediction on the current cotton production again.
