The town is rich in opals, 60% of residents live underground

There is a small town in Australia, and all 3,500 people in the town live underground. From the surface, there seems to be no one here. The town is called Coober Pedy and is 846 km north of Adelaide, Australia, where residents live underground. If you look at the ground, this place is very desolate, only a few hotels and a golf course, there is a feeling of abandoned town. In fact, the town has 3,500 inhabitants (large towns for foreign countries), most of which (60%) live underground, and their homes are caves dug underground.

Cooberpe was founded in 1915, when opal (opal) was discovered, and currently 95% of the world's opal is produced here. But the people who flocked to mine found that it was very hard to live on the surface – because the temperature here is very high, and in summer, the surface temperature here often exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. To solve this problem, they began to build "air-raid shelters" - excavating underground caves from the side of the mountain.

A hundred years later, in addition to the magnificent homes in the basement, there are several underground hotels and hostels that provide overnight accommodation and breakfast in Cooberte (Cubperdi Underground Hostel also won the Best Hostel Award in Australia last year). There are also churches, gift shops, several museums, a casino, and an indispensable small bar.
